Columbus College of Art & Design is now offering courses aimed at entrepreneurs and future business owners.
Six classes and one workshop on finance, accounting, culture and marketing, and art and design law begin this fall. They are part of CCAD’s Continuing & Professional Studies program, which is open to the public and CCAD undergraduate and graduate students.
“The creative economy is one of the fastest growing sectors of the global economy, as well as the local economy,” says Robin Hepler, spokeswoman for CCAD. “Employers want their creative leaders to understand the business side of their work, and nearly 20 percent of our grads will start their own businesses. With those two factors in mind, CCAD has begun a long-term expansion of its ties to the business community.”
The workshop, Building Your Small Business Identity, helps freelancers and small business owners create a branding system to use in print and online. It meets once a week from 6:45 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. for four weeks and costs $150.
Classes are either eight or 10 weeks long, and all but one cost $500 each. They are:
- • Web Design for Small Business, which teaches attendees how to use WordPress to launch an online portfolio, and familiarizes them with social media websites and Google Analytics. The class costs $300.
- • Accounting Foundations, which covers accounting systems and financial controls; sustainable financial habits for artistic career paths; and tax responsibilities and benefits for individual artists and artistic entities.
- • Finance Foundations, which teaches the real-world application of basic financial concepts, including planning and budgeting.
- • Foundations of Marketing and Culture, which covers the connections between cultural anthropology and marketing to reveal new opportunities for the creation and sale of work.
- • Art and Design Law Foundations, which uses real life examples to explore the law behind contracts and negotiation, intellectual property, business structures and planning, and basic policies and procedures.
- • Entrepreneurship Foundations, which examines the basic theories behind entrepreneurial activity. Attendees then work with each other to plan a new business and present it to seasoned entrepreneurs.
The classes will be taught by local professionals, including Kevin Gadd, founder and CEO of Venture Highway, which customizes online curriculum for entrepreneurial education.
“Our recent experience as the host site for the 10-xcelerator program for entrepreneurs, and knowing the teams involved used the Venture Highway platform, further validated our desire to forge ahead with an entrepreneur-focused program to better prepare our students once they graduate,” says CCAD President Dennison Griffith.
